all without involvement with att (ptl). low price and linux compatibility were my prerequisites for a router. my network consists of a 32 bit computer and a 64 bit computer, both running fedora 11. as a retired computer system manager, i was hesitant to introduce another point of failure. but there was really little to do other than hook it up and go to the url and go through menu. speed. i can watch justin.tv on wireless.
I found the router to be very good for what I needed. I was looking for a small wired router that I could plug 2 security cameras into and a computer and a cable modem. The features are great. It has a routing feature that allows you to assign public ports and forward them to private internal ports and IP's, allowing you to set up multiple servers, or cameras, or FTP's or whatever.Highly recommended.
The quick-start steps: plug it into the LAN, disable DHCP, give it an IP address etc, WEP security, set Transfer rate to 2 MBS (for the gameboys), and everything works without further fuss. I purchased this for a wireless access point for the kids' Wii and Gameboys, the $25 price tag being cheaper than other options. Very easy to set up and use - I've never even looked at the CD. I'm sure it would handle the routing, DHCP and other LAN chores if necessary. It's been running about three weeks so far with no issues. I recommend it.
She has a desktop with no wireless and I got her an ipod touch for Christmas, so my requirements were pretty basic. I had them up and running again in about ten minutes, and I'm terrible with networking stuff. I didn't take the time to figure out what. I went back to her house, and sure enough, something was wrong. My stepfather also tried, and failed. I didn't need anything blazing fast, and I didn't need it to support a lot of connections.
This gets the job done, cheap. I had it shipped to my mother's house, and since she was very excited about using her ipod with the internet, she tried to set it up herself, and failed miserably. I ordered this for my mother. I'm assuming either my mother or stepfather screwed something up, and that's why there was trouble again.Pros:-cheap-works fineCons:-Don't get this if you want blazing fast network speeds for file sharing or anything. and went through the wizard. Two days later, my mother called me again, and said that the internet wasn't working. If you want to access the internet, it's plenty fast for that; your internet connection speed is the bottleneck there, not the wireless g speeds.-Somewhat sub-par instructions/setup wizard.
When I got there, I reset everything, opened the setup page (192.168.10.1 or something. I needed a router with wireless and wired functionality. Again, I reset everything, went through the same process, and it worked again. Together, they had it so messed up that the desktop couldn't even access the internet when they removed the router from the setup and just plugged the computer back into the cable modem. it's in the instructions). It's been about two weeks since the last reset, and it seems to be working fine. -Not the sturdiest constructed router I've ever seen, but it's not like you'll move it around much.
Was setting up friend network and needed an inexpensive gateway for her network. This worked out just great. Ty.
